What to drink during the period of fasting?

The question of drinking is fundamental, dehydration happens very quickly when one fasts since one limits one’s diet which contains mostly water!

It is therefore essential to hydrate a lot but not with just anything.

All sodas and caloric drinks are unlimited during the nutrition period but during the fasting period, only certain liquids are compatible. I explain everything with the four ideal drinks for your body below.

1. Water

It is the drink par excellence to drink at will! Remember to hydrate yourself well in the morning when you wake up with a large glass of water and then throughout the day.

When the body tells us it’s hungry, it means it’s dehydrated, so think about it, it’s important! You can drink tap water, mineral, flat or sparkling, you will have a lot of choices!

You can even add to your water a spoonful of lemon juice (lime or lemon) or with a slice of fruit (cucumber, orange, apple, watermelon,…) as long as you don’t eat it afterwards.

In addition, salt, specifically Himalayan pink salt, is an ally of fasting, it is the purest salt on earth. You can add it to your water to replenish trace elements.

2. Coffee

Enjoy your coffee, classic or decaffeinated, the caloric intake is almost nil. As long as you don’t add sugar, milk, cream or sweeteners: in short, no added calories.

Your morning habit of coffee without sugar will be a little upset in the first week of fasting, if it is too difficult, to be able to reduce the amount of added sugar or milk day after day or replace it with honey, and then start the second week with a black coffee without adding anything more!

You will see at the beginning, it feels weird but then you can’t do without it, pure, it’s delicious, it’s good for your health! If it still doesn’t go away, take a little more time and after reducing the sugar, replace it with a pinch of powdered cinnamon to flavor it.

The coffee will boost you for the day, however note that you may need to moderate your usual coffee consumption, because during the fasting period you will be more sensitive and the effects of coffee will be felt more strongly than during the feeding period.

According to nutrition experts, the limit not to exceed is 6 cups per day on fasting days.

In summer, for a more refreshing recipe, you can also prepare your coffee normally and place it in the refrigerator or pour it in a cup with ice cubes, it makes you iced coffee!

3. Tea and Herbal Teas

Here another drink allowed during fasting, without adding sugar of course.

Teas have many interesting properties for the body: Some will be beneficial to lower blood sugar levels like Black tea, Chai tea and Oolong tea.

While Green tea and Mint tea will be more appetite suppressant. Mint tea and Linden infusion will also help to soothe gastrointestinal disorders.

You can also drink Thyme tea, which fights inflammation and swelling of the stomach, and is also a good appetite suppressant.

Small + of the teas, they will be able to bring you savour, that is pleasure without calories! It’s a change from water!

You can also brew and refrigerate them or add ice cubes for an iced tea during the summer months.

4. The Vegetable and Bone Broths

Another possible drink is broth to keep you well hydrated during fasting. Vegetable broth or bone broth should be prepared by you, as ready-to-use broths will not be as effective.

You can prepare your broth with almost all vegetables except root vegetables (i.e. not with potatoes, turnips, beets; carrots are however allowed), add onions, meat, meat bones, or fish, fish bones, and add aromatic herbs. During the fasting, you can drink the broth at will, without eating the vegetables of course!

In case of a feeling of dizziness, which is generally rather common at the beginning of fasting, the broth will provide you with the minerals and hydration you need to avoid this unpleasant sensation.

NB: if you have joint problems, favour the bone broth, it contains gelatin, so it will be more beneficial to you.

Now you know all about the drinks allowed during a fast, whether it is intermittent or mulitdays!
